154. Fuel sending unit

Entry:2022.10.10 / Work:2022.10.09←01

The movement of the fuel gauge became unstable, and sometimes the needle fell down to the left end. I kept running for a while, and after refueling, it returned to normal, but when the memory reading about 1/4, it suddenly fell down to the left end. This behavior was consistently reproduced.

I checked the wiring on the back of the meter and the resistance to prevent blurring, but it seemed to be fine, so I guessed that it was probably the fuel sending unit. However, in order to replace it, it was necessary to unload the engine and remove the tank, so I asked the special shop "SILVER REST" that takes care of my BUS.

As expected, the fuel sending unit was damaged, so it was replaced with an external product handled by "FLAT4", adjusted and reassembled. At the same time, it was cleaned the rusted part in the tank, and the rubber pipe leading to the tank was damaged, so it was replaced.

Correlation between actual remaining amount and memory. I made an illustration based on the photo of the meter I received.

This image is a combination of product photos borrowed from the FLAT4 website. This time we adopted this. It has a different shape than before.

There was VDO lettering on the rim of the lid and on the side of the float. Is there a VW mark if genuine?

When I took it apart, We found that the end of the wound coil, the coil around where it was when the fuel was filled, was broken.
