39. Rear window glass assembly
About 20 years ago, I got a good soft top (but it rear part is not good condition) from a demolish yard, and 10 years ago I got a new one at Yahoo Auction, but since there was no Rear window glass assembly, I decided to make it.
First, I cut the fabric from the used soft top, aligned it, and proceeded to the point where I could sew it with a professional sewing machine. Next, I went to a friend's house who have an industrial sewing machine to help me sew a thick part.
I heard that Kongo rope is suitable for inserting glass (it seems to be a kind of knitting method), wrap it around the groove of the glass shield, pull the rope and put it in the frame...
I had a hard time adjusting the position after the glass was inserted, but I managed to fit it!!
It was completed!
Wrap a rope around the groove on the outer circumference of the rubber frame and fit it into the frame.
After confirming that the fabric is firmly attached to the frame, set the glass and rubber frame and try to match them.
I'm going to turn it to the back side and hold it with a clip.
Align the frame and press it with a roller.
Mark the frame position and apply cement.
It will be glued to the frame, so cut it leaving the fabric.
Cut out where the glass will fit.
Sew the zipper onto the outer fabric. I sewed this myself.
Check where the fabric overlaps.
The seams are misaligned, but I think it's fine because it's hidden.
Cover the edges with rubber bias tape.
My friends are used to it, so he is good at it.
Overlap and sew the bottom part where the core will fit.
We want to sew again, so we are undoing the seams.
A friend who has an industrial sewing machine helped me with the thicker parts.
Is it rubber bias tape? Cover the edge of the fabric.
It seems that there was a white type and a black type inside the fabric.
This is what happens when you sew and tighten the zipper.
The side where the glass enters and the outside are completed.
Sew a rubber seal on the overlapping part.
However, the line is misaligned on the front side.
I was able to sew it neatly with the same width.
The zipper is also ported from the original.
The exterior uses the original in good condition.
Temporarily fasten the zipper to the fabric on the side where the glass fits and sew.
